Braces-Friendly Birthdays in McKinney

Braces-Friendly Birthdays in McKinney 2

If you’re throwing a birthday party for a loved one who has recently gotten braces, there are a few considerations you might want to make. There are new diet restrictions for those with braces and certain activities might be off-limits, but that doesn’t mean birthdays can’t still be fun! At Showtime Smiles Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, we’re big believers in birthday festivities, so here’s our guide for celebrating a braces-friendly birthday in McKinney.

Activities

There’s little you can’t do with braces on, but just to be safe, we recommend staying away from major contact sports like football or basketball without mouthguards. As much fun as the batting cages are, they might not be worth the risk. To learn more about youth sports safety, head over to our McKinney orthodontics guide.

Instead of engaging in high-intensity contact sports, here are our suggestions for birthday activities that are just as fun and a lot safer:

Escape Rooms

Escape rooms are a fun activity for kids and adults alike. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re rooms in which your party is safely locked. To exit, the group must solve a mystery with hints and puzzles that are placed around the room. Here are a two in McKinney that you can check out:

Movies

As film fanatics, we highly recommend seeing a movie in McKinney. We also show popular movies at Showtimes Smiles in our office, but nothing is quite like going to the theater. Instead of buying popcorn, save a few bucks and bring braces-friendly snacks like cheese cubes or chopped melons. These are our favorite cinemas in the area:

Roller Skating

Another great place to host a party is the roller rink! What’s better than a dance party on skates? Although there are no roller rinks in McKinney, there are a few in close proximity. These skate centers offer multiple deals to choose from including glow parties, basic parties, pizza parties, and private parties. We recommend calling a few months in advance to reserve a room.

Picnics

Parks are clean, spacious areas that are perfect for hosting parties to play games, dance, and talk. Located on Wilson Creek Parkway, the Towne Lake Recreation Center boasts an 18 hole golf course, a beautiful creek, picnic tables, volleyball courts, hiking trails, and a park. The pavilions can be reserved Friday through Saturday, but it’s first come, first serve any other day. To book one, it’s only $30 if you call six months in advance and it’s $50 if you call three months in advance.

If your loved ones are dog lovers and can’t bear to be without their pets, Bonnie Wenk Park welcomes pets to the party! Although the amphitheater is under construction until October 2018, there are still plenty of amenities available for use. There are hiking trails, a dog park, a pond, and splash pads.

Food

We admit it – having braces does limit the diet quite a bit, but that definitely doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of tasty dishes still available. For kids undergoing orthodontic treatment, here are our favorite party-pleasing platters:

Entrees

  • Pizza: There are so many iterations of pizza that it can be styled to suit anyone’s needs. Nowadays, you can get vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free pizzas with all types of toppings from classic pepperoni to outlandish pineapple and M&Ms. We advise getting thin crust that isn’t too crispy because crunchy foods can damage brackets. If you want to try some original McKinney pies, get them delivered from these classic joints:

  • BBQ: What’s more Texas than a backyard barbecue? Our state is known for having the best barbecues, featuring tender ribs that simply fall off the bone. If the meat is a little tough, cut it into cubes instead of trying to eat it directly. Hamburgers and hotdogs are also safe to eat because they don’t contain any sticky, hard, or chewy substances. If your child’s teeth are sore from braces, there are super soft foods like potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and mac n’ cheese that they can eat, too. The only food that’s not orthodontist approved is corn on the cob. It’s hard to chew on and the kernels can easily get stuck in the brackets. Grab some cornbread instead! If you don’t feel like firing up the grill, there are plenty of places the cater.

  • Mexican food: Mexican food includes a wide variety of food and there are tons of dishes that are acceptable to eat with braces. Hard shell tacos, chips, and tostadas are off-limits because they’re so crunchy and hard. However, soft tacos, enchiladas, empanadas, sopas, tamales are all good options.

Snacks

Skip the chips, popcorn, and candy this year. There’s no need for sticky caramels and crunchy corn chips that could pop a bracket off a tooth. Your guests will love these delectable snacks and they’re braces-friendly.

  • Pita bread and hummus: This Mediterranean classic is always a hit at parties. You can also serve pita bread with olives, Baba ganoush, muhammara, tzatziki, and eggplant dip for a full-blown mezze platter.
  • Cheese cubes: We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: cheese cubes are the perfect snack! In the dental world, there’s nothing better than a calcium-rich bite-sized snack like cheese cubes. They also make excellent movie night snacks if you’re stopping by the theater for your birthday festivities.
  • Chopped fruit: Watermelon, apples, grapes, and berries make for a delicious and refreshing snack in between the festivities. Simply dice them up to make them easier to eat and you’re good to go.
  • Pig-in-a-blanket: These cute, little mini-hotdogs are an adorable appetizer anytime. Serve with mustard or ketchup on the side.
  • Stuffed peppers: Instead of having crunchy hot Cheetos, try stuffed peppers instead. They’re not too spicy and they can be customized to your taste. Common fillings include rice, tomato sauce, ground beef, and herbs.
  • Sweet potato wedges: You can never go wrong with potato wedges of any type. When baked well, they’re fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. Sweet potato wedges are a healthy, irresistible finger food for kids and adults alike.

Dessert

Sugar is the great bane of every dentist’s world, but everyone deserves a sweet treat on their birthday.

  • Cake: People love sharing a slice of cake or cupcake on their birthday. After all, it’s an American tradition to make a wish and blow out your candles to start the year off right.
  • Flan: This unconventional treat is great for anyone who has just gotten braces and needs to eat super soft food. The sweet caramel sauce melts right in your mouth without sticky residue of its candy counterpart.
  • Fruit Parfait: Like flan, fruit parfaits are an excellent option for anyone who has a sore mouth from braces. Some parfaits come with nuts or granola, but anyone with braces should skip on those add-ons. Instead, top it off with cookie crumbs or honey.
  • Brownies: Calling all chocolate lovers! If you or a loved one are craving dessert, decadent, fudgy brownies are sure to satisfy. Just make sure to brush carefully afterward to get rid of any stray chocolate chips that could get lodged in the teeth.
  • Ice Cream: Even orthodontists indulge in ice cream once in a while, that’s how good it is. The cold, sweet way it melts in your mouth is irreplicable. Paired with cake or a hot brownie, this is the ultimate way to end a birthday (or any day).

Drinks

Fizzy drinks can stain braces, but the carbonation isn’t the culprit in these situations. Sugar is turned into acid by bacteria which in turn, damages the teeth. When patients wear braces, it’s difficult to scrub off the plaque-causing sugars from the teeth because wires and brackets are in the way. This puts patients at a higher chance of dental decay and gum disease, so we don’t recommend having overly sugary drinks on a regular basis. However, it’s okay to have a sip once in a while. To prevent dental complication, we recommend sipping on water afterward and brushing thoroughly.

Regardless of where your child spends their birthday or what kind of cake is served, they’re sure to have a good time as long as they’re surrounded by their loved ones. We know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true! In 10 years, it’s not the party that they’ll remember vividly, but the smiles and love from the people close to them.
