The Importance of Orthodontic Treatment

Many patients recognize the importance of regular dental check-ups, even if they don’t enjoy them. But few realize how important it is to visit your orthodontist regularly. Even when patients understand the importance of orthodontic treatments, getting them to go can be difficult. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), one in every five orthodontic patients is an adult.

Whether you don’t feel it is important enough to put on your to-do list or if you are just nervous about the check-ups, we assure you it is in your best interest.

When Orthodontic Treatment is Needed

A lot of patients believe that dental work alone is enough to correct issues of the mouth. But this is not true. While dental work can restore damaged teeth back to normal, orthodontics is necessary to realign crooked and misaligned teeth. Some of the oral health issues that require orthodontic treatments are:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Open bites
  • Over bites
  • Under bites
  • Overjet

There are many more oral health issues that require an orthodontic treatment. You can view the full list here.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

There is a wide range of different types of orthodontic treatments available at our McKinney, Texas office. The treatment method best for you will depend on which orthodontic issue you have.

For younger patients, we use the two-phase orthodontic treatment method. The first phase begins when the patient is around 7 years old and will help the jaw develop correctly. This will allow the permanent teeth to grow in straighter. The second phase begins when the patient has lost all of their baby teeth. This phase usually includes upper and lower braces being placed to help the teeth straighten out entirely.

Additionally, we also offer many other types of orthodontic treatments for patients who are older. Invisalign is available for both adults and teenagers alike. Invisalign is a set of specially made plastic aligners that work to slowly realign your teeth. While not every patient is a candidate for Invisalign, it can take less than a year of treatment for patients who do qualify.

We also offer many other services, which you can view on our Showtime Smiles Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry website. If you are interested in any of the orthodontic treatment options we offer at our McKinney, Texas office, you can contact us here or call us at 972.547.4443 to schedule an appointment.
